First class with David Paterson
The first days loot for the three students
Sheila, having had a pervious experience, has the most skills coming in
There is a lot of focus here
From the left is Andre, David, Sheila and me, Eric
Here I am swinging a hot blown ball to stretch the neck to make a bottle
Getting the first gather
You have to blow a small bubble in the first gather just to keep the blowpipe clear of cold glass
I put a heavy layer of "strawberry" colour (made with gold added to the glass) first.
The second, yellow, layer is laid out on the marver (steel table)
Very hot re-heat oven
Letting the first layer cool enough so that you get enough glass on the second gather
A nice big second gather
Blocking the second colour
David teaching me how to pull the gather back onto the end of the blowpipe
Reheating the blown ball before putting three flat sides on the bottle
I had to get the second gather back on center
I tended to not get the glass hot enough so the blowing took a lot of effort
For all our projects, David used a puntie to put a button on the bottom of all our blown balls prior to taking off the blowpipe.
This is a very tricky bit so, given the time available, none of us even tried it
More heat to strech the neck
I had to heat just the neck to be able to pull out the flared neck
Pulling the flare
You had to pick up the hot, finished glass, very carefully so as not to leave any prints in the soft glass
Cobalt
Adventurine
Cannary
Single gather broken off the puntie with the eye dribbled on by David
Strawberry
187?
This is my first open mouth jar. It got out of control because the blue heats more than the red and made the glass on that side too soft. Oh well it was a learning experience
Crimson
Cobalt
First layer "Carribean blue"
Second "Opaque blue"
"Adventurine"
"Cannary"
