Newfoundland's Provincial Plant
|
|
|
We took advantage of Lisa's attendance at the Principles of Distributed Computing conference
in St. John's to have a vacation in Newfoundland. I joined her in Deer Lake on July 28th after the
conference.
|
Lisa's friend Faith Fich was with us for the first few days. She brought a Newfoundland
flower book. We had a good time together identifying flowers. Lisa walked on ahead while
Faith and I studied flowers. (Lisa did help too, but tired more quickly of the game than did
Faith or I.)
We did the boat trip up Western Brook
Pond, a hike down Green's Point, the hike up Gros Morne, a
short walk in the table lands, and a half day hike down the
Green Garden Trail to the ocean (and back).

After Faith left, we drove back to Deer Lake and met Peter (Lisa's brother), Edna (Peter's
wife), and Edana (Edna's and Peter's daughter) at Boyd's (Edna's cousin). Boyd's friends Sean
and Kim, Kim's daughter Jessie and son Zach joined Peter, Boyd, Lisa, and me for a 2 night
backpack along the south and eastern edges of Gros Morne Park. It is an area that Boyd and Kim
have explored extensively. It was a real treat to go with them and to hike in this area. There
were moose and caribou and many wildflowers - some spectacular orchids - and no other people.

After hiking, we went up to Baie Verte and Fleur des Lys area. We paddled for one beautiful
day and briefly visited Round Harbour and La Scie. In Round Harbour, there was a sign
directing us to the house with the black trim if we wanted knitted goods. We visited the house
and came away with two sweaters, one for me and one for Enid. We didn't have quite enough cash
to pay for the sweaters so we had to augment with a small cheque. The woman who knitted the
sweaters didn't think she would be near a bank for the next few months!
