Information - Books and Websites

  1. Birds of the West Indies, Herbert Raffaele, James Wiley, Orlando Garrido, Allan Keith, Janis Raffaele. Princeton University Press, 2003.
  2. Coral Reefs, Caribbean and Florida, Eugene H. Kaplan. Peterson Field Guides, 1982. This is a good book to read as opposed to just using it as a field guide. It has good descriptions of how the coral reef communities are put together and "organized". It allowed me to make much better sense of what I was seeing underwater and what I have seen on other trips. The other more specialized books are better for identifying individual species.
  3. Reef Fish Identification, Florida Caribbean Bahamas third edition, Paul Humann, Ned Deloach. New World Publications, 2002. This is the book for amateur fish identification.
  4. Reef Coral Identification, Florida Caribbean Bahamas second edition, Paul Humann, Ned Deloach. New World Publications, 2002. The book for amateur coral identification. It also includes the marine algae.
  5. Florent's Guide to the Tropical Reefs. This web site has pictures of many of animals and plants that one encounters underwater. It is what allowed me to identify some of the sponges I photographed. It is a nice site to browse.
  6. Snorkeling Guide to Marine Life, Florida Caribbean Bahamas, Paul Humann, Ned Deloach. New World Publications, 2004. Has common fish and some different bits on the myriad of other creatures and plants.
  7. The Caribbean, A Diver's Guide, Elizabeth Wood and Lawson Wood. New Holland Publishers, 2000. Has common fish and some bits on the myriad of other creatures and plants.
